ABSTRACT:

Secondary sector plays very important role for the development of an economy. According to the study the percentage share of secondary sector is decreasing at the national level continuously but it is still more than Indian secondary sector. The paper attempted to find out compound annual growth rate (CAGR) during the period 2004-05 to 2018-19 for the secondary sector of Chhattisgarh. The state has huge amount of power and resources but due to lack of good use the share of secondary sector is not sufficient. It can be improved by installing new industries whereby the resources will be used and new employment will be generated. The state CAGR of secondary sector is 14.24839.

KEYWORDS: Secondary Sector, CAGR, Resources, Industries.

INTRODUCTION:

Chhattisgarh is a new state which was formed in November 2000. The state is famous for their customs, traditions, energy power, minerals, forest, industries, and labour force and because of such recourses it is growing very fast compared to other states. The state is a power hub of electricity which is sold to other states also whereby the state earns a good income from that particular sector. Moreover, the state exports coal, steel, tin etc to different countries. Industry sector is an engine for any country or any state for their empowerment. “Industrial structure describes the output and input relationship in various industrial strata. Proportion of production elements in different industries and their mutual interaction is very important for determining the optimum utilization of resources. In an industrialized economy it defines the parameters for growth and development in the economy (Yulin Zhao and Mudassar

Muhammad 2013)”. The secondary sector works like a mediator becauseit usually takes raw material from primary sector and delivered the final manufacturing goods to the consumer. Generally the sector is divided into two parts which are heavy industry and light industry. Heavy industries need huge amount of energy for converting row material into consumer goods. The state has so many large, middle and smallindustries such as National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) Company, Bhilai steel plant, Jindal power plant, In spite of such rich resource of Chhattisgarh is still described as a backward state in compare to other states of India. The paper is deals with the scenario of secondary sector and is trying to reveal the trend of growth rate and aims to discoverreason behind its condition of growth. But the share of secondary sector in Chhattisgarh is still more inthan the same sector of Indian GDP.

RELATED WORK:

The paper tries to understand the growth trend of secondary sector in Chhattisgarh and to evaluate its position as compared to other Indian States. There are some various literature reviews have been undertaken by other researchers. Some of the literature reviews are as follow:- Anju Rani (1) according to the study for the generating new employment in secondary sector there is need of short run policy and privet investment should be increased. More over share of informal sector employment is decreasing. Jesus Felipe (2) the paper used kaldor’s first law and foundstrong correlation between the nonmanufacturing output growth and manufacturing output. The paper also used time series approach for Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines and Thailand for the period 1967-92. Yahya Z. Alshehhi Judit Olah (3) attempted to analyse the contribution growth share of secondary sector of UAE economy from the year of 1990 to 2015.The average annual growth rate for manufacturing revealed the highest contribution to the secondary sector’s output and growth accounting model has been used in this paper.

OBJECTIVES:

Ø To know the Compound annual growth rate of secondary sector of Chhattisgarh economy.

Ø To see the trend of GDP shares of primary, secondary and tertiary sector.

Ø Comparative study of secondary sector between Chhattisgarh and GDP of India.

METHODOLOGY:

The paper is based on secondary data which has been taken from directorate of economic and statistics Chhattisgarh, Economic survey of Chhattisgarh and Planning commission of Indiaduring the period 2004-05 to 2018-19 and attempt to find out the growth trend of secondary sector in Chhattisgarh. For getting trend of growth Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) has been used with the help of M S Excel, SPSS software’s.

CAGR= (Antilog (b)-1)* 100

b= time coefficient,

Antilog = the log of secondary sector share in current price of Chhattisgarh.

CONCLUSION:

The paper studies the problem of secondary sector. The CAGR of secondary sector is 14.24839 during the period of 2004-05 to 2018-19. Chhattisgarh has huge amount of resources and it has much potentials forimproving itself but due to lack of optimal use of resources’ secondary sector is not performing as much as it should have been. But this is a good indicator thatthe output growth of secondary sector in Chhattisgarh is more thanIndia. According to the study the manufacturing sector provides huge amount of employment. Some of India’s largest industriesexist hereand the state is a hub of natural resources and power. This is also one of the reasons that maximum amount of raw materials are exported to other states and countries whereby the state is not generating good amount of employment in this sector.
